How Scared Should You Be of AI As a Writer?
Time for an obligatory email about AI...
I've been playing around with it some and here are the 3 things I've learned:
1. It's not as scary as you think. In fact, I used it to workshop a story idea that's been gnawing at my brain for some time. Though it's not quite the direction I want to take, it did give me a firmer grasp on what's been an elusive concept.
2. It's not going to replace us. ChatGPT in particular can't come up with ideas and let's face it...it's often the strength of an idea that sells, not the execution. Humans have ideas. All AI can do is build from the foundation we provide.
3. It's not terribly creative or unbiased. AI follows patterns which is great for structure in writing but not so great for originality. It also tends to rely a bit too heavily on stereotypes. For true creativity and unbiased storytelling, a human's touch is still VERY much needed.
How did I come to these conclusions? I provided ChatGPT with some prompts for various love stories...and then watched what it came up with.
For anyone interested, I decided to publish my AI experiment. You can find it here. And yes, just for kicks, I also used AI to help create the book cover.
