Regular Version:
The best part about being a book editor is that it’s easier to spot what doesn’t work in someone else’s writing. You get to take what you learn and apply it to your own writing. Sometimes it feels like cheating.
Here are 5 rather egregious phrases that I see over and over (and over) that cause clunky or weak writing:
began to / started to
Ex: “We began to see greater results” is weak. “We saw greater results” is stronger.
in order to
Ex: “My business exists
in orderto help people write better.” Isn’t that better?I believe / I think / in my opinion
Ex: “
I believegreat moments are born from great opportunities.” Don’t downplay your confidence or authority with “I believe” or “I think.” Your readers already know it’s what you believe/think.I remember / I recall
Ex: “
I rememberthe day I landed my first client. Itstarted with a flat tire.” Just launch people into the story. It’s obvious you remember the story or else you wouldn’t be sharing it.Believe it or not
Ex: “
Believe it or not, butgreat writing comes from great editing.” Don’t diminish the trust level between you and your reader.
Exceptions to these? Dialogue. We all use these phrases when we talk and, for the most part, that’s fine. You just don’t need them taking up your word real estate on the page.
